Coaching Outside the Box: Changing the Mindset in Youth Soccer Description

About the Author

Paul Mairs and Richard Shaw grew up in the soccer hotbed of North West England playing against the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Steven Gerrard. After they both progressed through the academy system of the professional and former English Premier League (EPL) club Blackpool FC, Richard went on to gain a National Championship and All-American honors playing college soccer in the U.S., and played professionally in the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League). Paul continued his playing career in England and became heavily involved in youth development while gaining his Master’s degree and pursuing research in sport science. Furthermore, after developing young players both in Europe and the U.S. for over 15 years and travelling to various countries to research coaching methods and philosophies together they have collectively acquired valuable insight and knowledge.

Editorial Review: "In Soccer Are You doing the Best By Your Child? Before you answer, you may want to read 'Coaching outside the Box, Changing the Mindset in Youth Soccer,' by Paul S.A. Mairs and Richard E. Shaw. Using a variety of examples and perspectives of many development experts this book provides the reader with compelling information on the damaging problems that currently exist in youth soccer due to large numbers of adults demonstrating misguided or outdated beliefs about working with children and/or harboring ulterior motives that are simply not beneficial to the player’s best interests. It is a thought provoking read!" New York State West Soccer Association: Striker West, Feb 2013.

ATTENTION: Soccer Coaches, Parents and players, THIS IS A MUST READ. I purchased this book on a Friday and could not put it down. Soccer in the US has exploded and seems to be gaining momentum year after year, this being said, there are many options to look at when getting your child involved in soccer. My son has been involved in competitive youth soccer for five years. This book will change the way you look at training and development as a whole, it may even cause you to question the club/program your son or daughter is involved with today. I would recommend this to players, definitely parents and intermediate and high school coaches, anyone that wants to gain a better understanding of what you should expect for your child and from the club environments. All too often, we focus on the competition (games) and not the development of the child both from a technical and skills perspective but as this book exudes, allowing the child to embrace the passion for the game. Too many regional/national programs focus on the game, travel at a very early age and do not truly focus on the development of the player. Each year they have try-out to fill a spot with the best player with no regard for players. As the authors puts it, "Win at any cost-mentality". This is not healthy at any level and is destroying the game, and it is still a game. I watched parents and coaches from the sidelines for many years and are still taken back by their comments and attitude towards the game. It is shameful at some times. This book will put the game, training and development into perspective, you will not look at soccer in the same light after reading this book.

Coaches, this will enhance your effectiveness as a coach, regardless if you are coaching recreational or competitive club soccer.
This book offers a brutally honest look into issues relevant to childhood, never mind merely soccer, where parenting, learning, development and maturity collide with competition.

It's an easy, quick read. The greatest assets of the book are the its organization and flow, its perspective and the research supporting its views and conclusions, specifically the credentials being 2nd to none. As I read some of what the book conveys, I've thought about my own conversations or debates I've been a part of or witnessed, and as often is the case (especially in youth sports and coaching), it seems one point of view is often diminished based on a perceived lack of standing. Well, there isn't much of that here - when the directors of youth academies, like Manchester United, have something to say, they clearly have standing in the discussion.

So let's get one thing straight, while much of what the book conveys feels like stating the obvious, the entire point is the contradiction between what is so easily said by many, but enacted by so few - and all of these highly-credentialed supporting points of view are brought to bear this reality out like a hammer over your head - there's talking the talk, and then there's actually walking the walk.

This book does a great job creating the imperative that in American youth soccer we can do A LOT better and it starts with each individual ADULT participant embracing a more evolved point of view and having a sense of what's right and what's wrong and making appropriate choices for the interests of the children involved in the sport.
