It is well known that the password, while the most widespread information security mechanism, is also one of the most insecure. It comes down to the fact that the average person can't create and maintain secure passwords.
When it comes to physical locks, the average lock on your home and in your office is equally insecure. How insecure it in? In a fascinating book on the topic, Deviant Ollam writes in Practical Lock Picking, Second Edition: A Physical Penetration Tester's Training Guide that it is really not that difficult.
When it comes to information security penetration tests done on the client site, the testers will most often have permission to be inside the facility. On rare occasions, the testers need to find alternative means to gain entrance. Sometimes that means picking the locks.
All of the information in the books is long known to professional locksmiths. For those whose responsibilities include physical security, it is hoped that they are at least at the level of the locksmiths, and have designed their physical security plant accordingly.
In Practical Lock Picking, Second Edition: A Physical Penetration Tester's Training Guide, Deviant Ollam shares his passion for lock picking, which is manifest throughout the books.
Ollam is a member of The Open Organisation Of Lockpickers (TOOOL), a group whose goal is to advance the general public knowledge about locks and lock picking. TOOLS mantra is that the more that people know about lock technology, the better they are capable of understanding how and where certain weaknesses are present. This makes them well-equipped to participate in sport picking endeavors and also helps them simply be better consumers in the marketplace, making decisions based on sound fact and research.
I have to say this is nothing but a slick re-cover of everything Dev has already done. Even the story on his parents iron.
YES, its extremely valuable material.
YES, you WILL be missing out on everything and learn the wrong way if you dont read this author's teachings.
I just HAVE to take off 1.5 to 2 stars because its a very expensive "reprint" of sorts.
There is some material I havent seen before. It's probably worth it for that alone, but I just cant get myself to validate the release price for a softcover book despite it matching up nice with all my other softcover books from this publisher.
If you DO have all of Dev's books already, you might as well get this one if you like collecting books (like I do) but you wont be getting your moneys worth.
I'm an ass for giving 3 stars AND saying "If this is your only book on lockpicking, this is it", but really, this is it. Most others are bunk OR are so vague with crummy pictures, you arent learning anything. I've learned MORE from the author in under an hour of reading (and a few minutes at our table in the Lockpick Village at DEFCON 19) than I have in my ENTIRE Foley-Belsaw locksmithing course I tool in the late 80s.
He isnt a shady character like Schuyler Towne (never delivered on his crowdsourcing lockpick set despite overfunding), he is quite a remarkable guy with an interesting personality; his voice ALONE burns his teachings in your brain. If you ever get a chance to see him at a hacker con, DO IT. Prepare to drink alcohol as well. He's enjoying this, and so will you.
