Although I enjoyed reading this book more than MANY of the others I've read lately, I don't think I enjoyed it quite as much as "Going Home". I always enjoy a good surviving the end of the world story. However, half way through this book a few things began to bug me;
- A. American has been a prepper for years and has a wife and 3 daughters. One would assume that he based the story on his family. If I were his wife (and daughters, depending on their age) I would find it VERY disturbing that not one woman in the "neighborhood" including his wife and daughters, are capable of more than the most domestic of thoughts or actions.
- Not one woman has volunteered to stand watch. Seriously? Here's a clue..... there's nothing more dangerous than a woman protecting her children.
- His wife turned to him like a brain damaged monkey and asked if it could get that bad... Really?
- His daughters complained about eating oatmeal while their neighbors are starving to death and beginning to look like war prisoners in a death camp. Talk about a few kids that would be skipping some meals. That oatmeal would have immediately been taken to the neighbors kids (and his would do without) or his kids would just be missing the next few meals.
- The world as we know it has come to an end. Far as I know, America doesn't have commercial coffee farms (except in Hawaii). Pretty sure you won't get it after TSHTF. In this book, every time they turn around they're drinking coffee or tea. You'd think they'd REALLY stretch the coffee and drink ONE cup every morning (and probably not a large one), and tea once a week or so as a treat. I'd be breaking out those tiny little china cups grandma used and ditching the massive mugs we use now.
