The rising popularity of LEGO as an art form is emphatically punctuated in Mike Doyle's book, Beautiful LEGO. Whereas the title seems to obviously declare what's inside, once you crack the pages and take a look, you'll wonder how Doyle kept his title so simple. This book is spectacular and should be more adequately titled, "267 pages of stunning, crisp, high resolution, full color photos of LEGO creations that will blow you away." Even the back cover and fold-over dust jacket are packed with artfully arranged high res. images, rather than busy words. This book is definitely destined to become the de rigueur of coffee table LEGO books [and may shove a few modern art books out of the way as well.]
Beautiful LEGO takes you on a jaw-dropping photo journey of the creations of around 70 different LEGO artists from around the world, including brief interviews with about a dozen of them. The LEGO creations depicted in the book range in size from Doyle's 200,000 piece, Contact-- the fantasy city featured on the cover-- down to 10 piece birds and snails with amazing character. Unlike other LEGO books where the photography and resolution are secondary, every image in this book appears to consist of a well-lit, clutter-free, high res. images destined for the Smithsonian. Many images are so clear you can see the airtight seams between even the smallest of bricks.
Among the strengths of this book is that Doyle does not linger on any particular LEGO artist, building style or motif for more than a few pages. The upside to this is that the reader gets a wide-ranging view of the amazing capabilities of the artist and their bricks, but the downside is that you may crave more.
