Twilight of Abundance: Why Life in the 21st Century Will Be Nasty, Brutish, and Short Description

Baby boomers enjoyed the most benign period in human history: fifty years of relative peace, cheap energy, plentiful grain supply, and a warming climate due to the highest solar activity for 8,000 years. The party is over—prepare for the twilight of abundance.

Few books make a claim to prophesise the world’s future. Of those, precious few do it well. Twilight of Abundance is one of those rare books that makes a very compelling and credible case of foretelling what is in store for us – and it’s not a pretty prospect.

The book has various threads, each a fascinating expose of an existential facet of our modern world. It’s tempting to say that these threads are woven into a yarn, but Twilight has a ring of truth about it that everyday yarns conspicuously lack.

The overarching and unifying theme of the book concerns the strong likelihood that the under–appreciated, life-giving nuclear reactor in the sky is destined to go to sleep on us, relatively speaking – and soon. The present and predicted sun-spot cycles point to reduced solar activity and makes way for a real-life test of the cosmoclimatology theory. Put simply, when the solar magnetic field weakens, more cosmic rays are able to enter the earth’s atmosphere and thus seed cloud formation. More clouds tend to reflect more radiation back out into space, thus helping to cool the earth.

Why is this important? Well, a 2 degrees C cooler earth means less food to go around due to a drastically reduced growing season: seasons will be shorter, crop-growing areas will shrink towards the equator (and shrink to lower altitudes) and complications such as killing frosts will become more frequent.

So what? one might ask. There’s a surplus of grain, right? Right now there is, but not in a much colder world. Countries with populations that handily exceed their natural carrying capacity and thus rely on imported grain will be in serious trouble.
