This book was given to me free for review. This is the fourth edition of the book Diabetes for Dummies, and it is an information packed book. It is not necessarily a book that one reads cover to cover in one sitting; the book contains too much information to retain all at once. Additionally, this book has the greater emphasis on Type 2 diabetes, though Type 1 is mentioned. Apparently the author has a separate book for Type 1 Type 1 Diabetes For Dummies. This book assumes that the reader knows absolutely nothing about Diabetes, so some information may be redundant for some people. The author covers just about any and every body part that can be damaged by diabetes, and that seems to be almost everything. He also provides a glossary of terms, websites that might be useful, and a lot of extra resource material. What did not work for me, is the A1C chart without the corresponding blood glucose level in an easy to read format. I guess I needed more ease of reading without having to extrapolate information from the paragraphs. I also thought the recipes were an unnecessary add-on, and I would have preferred a week or two of sample menus, with recipes where needed. Fitting diabetic eating into the whole of my day is the key issue, not how to make a salad. The book
If you're new to the diabetes game, there's a good chance you're suffering from information overload. Anything from worrying whether or not you should exercise (heart risk), to learning what foods you can and cannot eat -- it all adds up to a lot of confusion. This new installation in the Dummies series (actually an update to an earlier Diabetes for Dummies edition) will prove eminently helpful. It's mainly oriented to the recently-diagnosed. But anyone who's looking to get a good grip on what Diabetes is about will find the book useful.

The main sections of the book are as follows, as well as some of the topics covered in each section:

Part 1 -- Dealing with the Onset of Diabetes -- Defines the different types of diabetes, and explains blood sugar and insulin.

Part 2 -- How Diabetes Affects Your Body -- Short- and long-term complications, including sexual and pregnancy issues.

Part 3 -- Managing Diabetes: The "Thriving with Diabetes" Lifestyle Plan -- Glucose monitoring, diet, exercise, medications.

Part 4 -- Special Considerations for Living with Diabetes -- Diabetic children and elderly, occupation and insurance issues, recent medical developments, what doesn't work.

Part 5 -- The Part of Tens -- Preventing diabetes, myths, getting help.

Final Verdict: This book will serve anyone well who needs to get their feet wet on the subject of diabetes. The information is comprehensive and user-friendly. Recommended.
