I've been using this book for two different classes and it's awful. It's extremely dry and doesn't seem to try and teach the reader in an "average person" wording. I'm a CS major, not a stats major so the terminology gets annoying at times. Also, the book will use examples and use random values. That would be fine if the authors described WHY they chose said values instead of saying "alpha = 70.8" and moving on. Lastly, the book's problems and examples cite sources A LOT. This makes reading them tiring and you tend to skip around.
Was not a good introduction or study aid to the field of Statistics.

Contrary to many of the reviews posted here this is an excellent introduction to probability and statistics. Keep in mind though that this book does require a strong familiarity with set theory and calculus. If your familiarity with either subject is shaky you are going to struggle through this book (and with probability and statistics in general).
Other reviewers have stated that the book is dry and not written for the "average reader". Nothing could be further from the truth. You have to remember that this is not meant to be a light-intuitive introduction to the subject. This is meant to be a first introduction to rigorous-mathematics based probability and statistics. Example and problems will require you to understand not only the underlying theory but also how to effectively and efficiently run the necessary calculations to derive the correct answer.
I am currently pursuing a degree in statistics and still use this book as a reference for my upper division stats courses. My only advise would be to purchase the solutions manual. In many instances the author will walk you step-by-step through the solutions.
