Gosh this book was really boring and slow to get through. And I wasted my time and money on this series because I did not get the outcome I had hoped for. This one quote from Claire disturbed me and made me very, very angry...
"Some would argue that a foundation built on kidnapping, isolation, violence, an yes -even rape- would never stand. I must disagree. We lived through hell and came out the other side. Like the song says, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I can't imagine anyone having a stronger foundation than ours."
The message that this one quote sends to women is disturbing and scary... forgiving the man who kidnaps, beats and rapes me will make me stronger??? I'm sorry but I respect women who have been brutalized and raped by husbands, boyfriends etc... far too much to condone this type of thinking even in fiction. Yes, tragedy can make you stronger Claire but choosing to stay with the abuser instead of walking away makes you weak... making decisions based on your hormones instead of making decisions using your head makes you weak.
The only reason why I completed this series is because I had hoped Claire would actually grow a backbone and find a way to stick it back to the abusive man who nearly killed her in book one. She is the most na?ve and annoying character and apparently quite easily manipulated and forgives easily when there is a big bank account full of money involved.
I do not have a problem with disturbing content... I read books with disturbing content all of the time.
I will admit that I was almost scared to read Convicted. I had invested so much time and emotion with Consequences and Truth that I wasn't sure if my heart could take much more. I did a reread of both books before diving into Convicted and now that my journey with Tony and Claire has ended, I can only say that I am truly in awe of Aleatha Romig and her insanely ridiculous talent for writing.
Convicted, like the two books before it, offered more twists and turns than my body endures during a Zumba class! My heart was racing, my palms sweaty and my head? Oh let's not even go there...it pounded almost as much as one of Claire's headaches.
However, through all the flashbacks, the heartbreak, the agony, there was hope. There was always that flicker, whether seen in Claire's emerald eyes or Tony's chocolate beauties, that these two seemingly mismatched souls had a chance at true happiness. I am delighted to say that I was not disappointed.
To say that this series was like no other would be almost unfair to the author. Because not only did it raise the bar on what I now would deem stellar but it increased my need to read more if that is even possible. Yes, Aleatha Romig, you have made me want to not only read more but to devour the written word like never before.
I can only tell others that this mind---- of a series, which seems to be the word that is most often used to describe these books and I know you all know the word I mean, is well worth the angst, the heart palpitations, the laughter, the tears and every other emotion you didn't even know you had.
