Reading a Rick Steves' book is a lot like asking a friend for recommendations when traveling. A really informed, borderline neurotic friend. Still, you appreciate the heck out of his attention to detail. Most travel guides like Lonely Planet and Fodor's write from a disembodied third person voice, which I think feels a little "facty" and sterile. Rick Steves writes from the first person and you can tell when he sounds excited and passionate so you know what spots really are "must sees." He's not afraid to recommend places off the beaten path and his lodging recommendations have never let me down. Also, by putting his name on all of his books, he's tying them to his reputation. He wants you to trust him and, at least for me, I really do. I first bought one of his books when I took a trip to Ireland last year and after a week, I never touched the Lonely Planet guide I also bought.
I would recommend this book for anyone who has a number of weeks available for European travel and is doing a modified "backpacking" type trip. I bought this book to get a sampling of what's available in Europe and try to plan where I would like to take my next big trip when I have a week of vacation (and maybe hit one or two countries) but for this purpose it sort of felt like I was browsing cars that I couldn't afford with a lot of me thinking "That would be nice to do if I had more time." The content is great but if you're looking to travel to just one or a couple countries, try one of his more specific books, definitely!

If you are traveling to Europe, Buy this book. It is full of hotel, restaurant, sightseeing, and entertainment info. I saved some real dollars by knowing to buy oyster cards in London, OV Chipkaarts in Amsterdam, and carnet's in France. It even alerted my fiancee and I to the scams we could expect in Paris!
