The Execution: A Jeremy Fisk Novel Description
Review
“[A] gripping adventure . . . Wolf has moved from strength to strength, from his early success as the creator of TV’s
Law & Order to his more recent incarnation as novelist. Not to be missed!” (BookPage.com)
“A page-turning novel that reads like a compelling episode of the best television has to offer. And like his stories from
Law & Order, the novel feels like it could be ripped from the headlines.” (
Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
“[Wolf] is now putting his stamp in the political thriller genre challenging the likes of Brad Thor and David Baldacci . . . a master storyteller and it shows perfectly in
The Execution. (Suspense Magazine)
From the Back Cover
NYPD Detective Jeremy Fisk hunts an assassin working for a shadowy cartel in this action-charged second installment of Dick Wolf's New York Times bestselling series—a masterful thriller that blends politics, intrigue, and twisting suspense
A number of bodies are discovered on the United States' border with Mexico, each carved with a bizarre symbol: a hummingbird. Detective Cecilia Garza—dubbed the Ice Queen among her colleagues at the Mexican intelligence agency because she's famous for never showing an ounce of weakness—arrives at the scene and recognizes the image immediately; it is the calling card of a killer called Chuparosa, a man both feared and celebrated for his cunning and brutality. Known to be incorruptible in a seemingly lawless land, Detective Garza has pursued this killer for years, yet knows little about him, except that he's merciless and heading to New York City—along with the rest of the world.
It's United Nations Week in Manhattan and Jeremy Fisk—an integral member of the NYPD's Intelligence Division, an antiterror unit modeled on the CIA—can't let his grief over a devastating loss keep him from his duty to safeguard the city and the world's most powerful leaders. Complicating matters is the startling news of a mass murder on the beach in nearby Rockaway—and the arrival of a beautiful and assertive Mexican detective determined to do things her way.
To have a chance at finding and stopping Chuparosa, these uneasy allies must meld their opposing investigative styles. They soon discover that there's much more to this threat than meets the eye—and Fisk will have to learn the hard way that justice is not always blind.

"The Execution" is prolific television writer and producer Dick Wolf's second novel, both featuring NYPD detective, Jeremy Fisk. Fisk is recovering from wounds resulting from intercepting Swedish Muslim terrorists who were sneaking into the US across the Canadian border--yes, I know it sounds screwy. He is assigned light duty including protecting diplomats during United Nations Week in New York which will include the presidents of both Mexico and the US signing a narcoterrorism treaty.
But something evil is afoot. Twenty-three headless bodies were discovered along the US/Mexico border and just as UN Week begins, more beheaded bodies are found on Rockaway Beach in Queens. A Hummingbird is found carved into these bodies, a symbol representing a depraved violent Mexican killer known only as Chuparosa. Commandante Cecelia Garza, an officer in Mexico's intelligence agency, arrives in NY to protect Mexican President Vargas while secretly hoping to find Chuparosa for personal reasons.
After some initial sparring, Fisk and Garza reluctantly team up to stop an anticipated assassination which no one else deems credible. Distrust and suspicion slowly dies between the two as potential romantic sparks begin to build; yet, there remain unspoken secrets between them that prevent romantic action. Garza has other agendas that Fisk can only speculate upon as they close in on the mysterious Chuparosa, all the while wondering who pulls his strings. The climax and its aftermath finally raised the thrill level for this reader as more than one secret and more than one killer is revealed.
I respect and enjoy Wolf's work immensely on television and I thoroughly enjoyed "The Intercept", his first novel.
As a fan of Dick Wolf's work, primarily Law & Order SVU, I've come to see his shows on a scale from Ok to Wow!!. This book was Ok. The main character, Jeremy Fisk, is ported over from Wolf's first novel (The Intercept). This time the book kicks off with Jeremy fighting Swedish jihadists infiltrating from Canada. (That may sound weird, but this section is one of the best written and interesting parts of the book.) As part of the NYPD Intelligence Division, Jeremy must deal with various federal agencies including Homeland Security, FBI, ICE, Marshall's Office and CIA. In addition, the UN, every foreign government, and every agency within every government has some kind of security apparatus with whom Fisk must liaise.
After the Swedish jihadists incident, Fisk (who's recuperating from the incident) is tasked by the NYPD to work with security during UN Week, an event where heads of state from all over the world converge on NYC. It's supposed to be light work, mostly desk work, but Fisk gets caught up in the drama of protecting the Mexican president who is to sign an anti-drug trafficking accord with the US president. However, Fisk gets wind of an attempt on the life of the Mexican president, dramatically announced by the discovery of several decapitated bodies on Rockaway beach (part of Queens). It has all of the hallmarks of a Mexican drug cartel execution. The victims are identified by different cartel tattoos, and Fisk comes to learn of the evil Mexican drug kingpin known as "Chuparosa." The word 'chuparosa' is a Mexican term for hummingbird (literally, 'rose sipper'), and the bad guy leaves hummingbird calling cards in his wake. Thus Fisk meets Mexican Comandante Cecilia Garza--a stunningly beautiful Mexican intelligence agent.
