Eggs in a Casket Description
The ladies of the Cackleberry Club are always ready to serve—whether they’re cooking up breakfast or sniffing out a bad egg. While Petra handles the breakfast rush at the Cackleberry Club, the café’s other two owners, Suzanne and Toni, head to Memorial Cemetery to help prepare for its 150th anniversary celebration. But as they search the winding paths for the historical society tent, they discover something else out of place: the body of ex-prison warden Lester Drummond lying facedown in someone else’s freshly dug grave.
In the small town of Kindred, everyone knows everyone, and Lester was no exception. Suzanne knew him as the creepy guy who made unwanted advances on her friend Missy Langston. But now it appears the man was hiding a few secrets…and at least one of them was worth killing for.
As the case cracks open, there are plenty of suspects to consider—from recent parolees to Missy herself, who Suzanne and Toni saw speeding away just before they found the body. Now, with a cemetery celebration in the offing, and the local authorities in over their heads, it’s up to the Cackleberry Club to unscramble the clues and clear their friend’s name.

This is the 5th book in the Cackleberry Club Mystery. This is not a series that has to be read in order, so if you get a chance to read one of them, I would urge you to do so. Ms. Childs has a skill for grabbing her readers and entertaining them with every turn of the page. The characters in these books make me wish that I lived in Kindred, and could hang out at the cafe. Strong, endearing women, make this a must read "chick book".
Meet Suzanne, Toni and Petra, friends who open a small local cafe, after fate leaves them wondering what to do with themselves. The cafe specializes in, what else, but eggs. Petra is the cook, who keeps the townsfolk coming back for her amazing dishes. Toni and Suzanne are the waitresses, who have a tendency to spoil their customers, not a bad thing in my opinion. ( I liken the cafe to the local diner where we live, called the Downtown Diner.) The food keeps the locals coming back for more, but it's the ambiance that pulls them back.
Suzanne and Toni seem to find themselves in the midst of the death of the former prison warden, Lester Drummond, after finding him face down in a newly opened grave. Although not meant for Lester, the killer was just taking advantage of the situation. Sheriff Doogie warns the ladies to stay out of police business, but after the Sheriff has an accident and is left for dead, they are right back in the thick of things. Only after Suzanne's beau, Dr. Sam is lured out into a terrible storm does Suzanne figure out who the killer is.
I hope that Ms. Childs continues to write this series, the ladies are the type of women I would like to have as neighbors. Ms. Childs has other cozy mysteries that she writes, the Tea Shop mysteries and the Scrapbooking mysteries. I find them as enjoyable as the Cacklebury Club folks and always look forward to another release from her.

This was a gentle, good read with just enought suspense to engage the reader without adding tension to her day.
My only disappointment was the quick and unengaging ending. I guess I wanted just a bit more complication... Sort of, more drum-roll!
