I was very pleasantly surprised by this book! It has a great summary of what paleo is, and what it does for you, as well as containing the cookbook. I think this would be excellent for anyone who is just getting their feet wet in Paleo!
I know a lot of the information, but it is always good (for me) to read things like this over again; it helps get me remotivated! So I don't mind at all rereading the basics. I do think they could have gone into more detail on the benefits of coconut oil; they skimmed over that part! For people that don't know about that, it's a great thing to research, and see what the medium chain fatty acids can do for you!
The Paleo diet reduces inflammation, and coconut oil reduces inflammation, so it's like a double whammy using lots of coconut oil in the diet. My research has shown me that many of the really bad things we have in our bodies, such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis and sore joints, and obesity can all be traced back to inflammation, which is one thing that makes the Paleo such a great diet to try! It helps so many things we get wrong with us!
The recipes in the book are great! I haven't had it too long, and have tried only 3 so far, but all of them were great and are definitely keepers that will go into my recipe box! The Easy Chicken Curry with Cabbage (in the slow cooker) was GREAT, and was really easy! Also tried the Mango Coconut Chipotle Chicken and the Cocoa Cauliflower, both of which were also wonderful! There was a great recipe for barbecue in there with NO sugars in it that sounded good. In fact, every recipe I looked at was one I will be willing to try one day, which is unusual for a cookbook for me!
The book DOES tell you to use the microwave to warm stuff at times, which I do NOT recommend.
For medical reasons, last fall we switched to a mostly-Paleo diet. As you might expect from someone who owns 400 cookbooks (and has reviewed plenty of them on Amazon!) that set me on a journey to find the best options available. Most people want only one or two cookbooks for a genre, not a dozen. (Obviously I am immune to that trend!) Amazon Vine recently offered me the Paleo Cookbook for Dummies, and I was glad to give it a try. As it turns out, it's... meh. Okay. There's nothing wrong with it, but it wouldn't be the single book I picked out to give you.
One issue -- common among many Paleo books -- is that it devotes a fair amount of verbiage to the reasons you should switch to Paleo. Like many of these, the text has an evangelical undertone, doing its best to convince you to -- in this case -- commit to a 30-day "Paleo reset." I suppose that serves a purpose if you're new to the idea, but after the first read-through those pages are ultimately wasted.
There's also a few chapters given over to the foods you should and shouldn't eat, as well as the items that fill in for forbidden items. That makes sense, since you need to restock your pantry and contemplate, "But but what will I serve the tasty gravy on, if I don't have mashed potatoes?!"
I've also learned that every Paleo cookbook has its own "what is okay" items; some say dairy is okay, others avoid it. Some Paleo cookbooks assume you'll fry in coconut oil, others olive oil, and so on. (This one is ghee-friendly, and mostly has a "whatever works for you" approach, which is nice.) One big variation in Paleo books is the acceptability of various sweeteners; this one uses honey and maple syrup, always with a light hand.
