I ordered this guidebook, Lonely Planet Hawaii, because my husband and I took an all-too-short trip to Hawaii earlier this year, and we are both eager to go back and experience our 50th state in a little more depth than we did the first time around. I was hoping that this guidebook would help, and I was not disappointed.
Hawaii is a beautiful and complex state, and this guide covers just about every aspect of it: people, culture, history, natural resources, ecology, and cuisine, to name just a few. The book helps the reader plan a trip based on his or her individual interests, whether they are artistic, historical, or nature-oriented. There are the usual "Where to Stay" and "Where to Eat" features, as well as some "Don't Miss This" features as well. If you are traveling with children, this book includes several child-friendly attractions to help you plan a trip that the entire family can enjoy. The book includes an up-to-date driving map that includes each island, helping in the planning of an itinerary. It should be noted that the maps are not street maps; rather, they give an overview of each island. If you want a street map, you will need to go elsewhere. (I suggest the Auto Club, which has superb maps that alone are worth the price of membership if you travel a great deal.)
In our previous travels, we have relied on Eyewitness Travel Guides, and if I were forced to select only one guide, I would prefer Eyewitness. I do not know if they have one on Hawaii, but I suspect they do. The advantage of the Eyewitness guides is the superb photography that accompanies many of the cultural and geographic entries. Eyewitness claims to be "The Guides That Show You What Others Only Tell You," and we have found this to be true.
