It is too easy for us to forget the sheer sensual delight of food: the odors, the textures, the colors, the shapes, the sizes, and the exquisite array of tastes that it enables us to experience. We are hurried, stressed, obsessed with calories, even, sometimes, with nutritional value, which drives us to think "potassium" instead of seeing a succulent, yellow, curved banana that is worthy to be included in a still life.
Nutritional value and and health benefits are at the heart of this slender, lovely volume, and each food discussed merits equal love and attention. A friend gave the book to me as a gift, and by the time I had leafed through it on the metro I had selected my dinner for that very evening. My family guests included a two and one-half-year-old granddaughter, and the recipes are ideally suited for the young as well as the adults. This is just one of its compelling features. We are encouraged to use fresh ingredients, and to be aware of the presentation: "Don't be monochrome,"is one of the five cardinal rules given for healthy and immensely satisfying meals.
I love to cook, and own many fine cookbooks. This book is the one with which I am having the most fun! And a cook's enjoyment augurs well for a delicious repast. The author's "philosophy of cooking" is refreshingly sane.
