I had the privilege of taking her one-hour drama class at U.S.C. I learned an immense amount not only about writing television drama but writing in general (character objectives, conflict, structure, outlining, scene construction, effective dialogue, etc.). She ran the classroom like it was a writers' room, and outside of class, I had this book (earlier edition) to help me prepare. If you aren't fortunate to be in a position to take a class with her, then this is the next best thing. Get this book now, because everything you need to know from structure to breaking in to the business is here, and I would suggest this book as a useful complement:
Starting Your Television Writing Career: The Warner Bros. Television Writers Workshop Guide By Michael
A must-have book for university screenwriting professors as well as die-hard fans of television drama. Slipping into the pages of Pamela Douglas' "Writing the TV Drama Series" is not unlike being invited to sit in on an exclusive master class taught by 11 of the most creative minds in Hollywood. These experts' collective insights on the creative process and the realities of breaking into the business are illuminating and encourage readers to come away with a better understanding of what makes them tune in every week to their favorite programs. If you've ever said to yourself, "I could write a show like that," this text is a major wake-up call that it's not as easy as it looks.
